Description

Asrol , chandan khurd ,choti chandan, اسرول، چندن خورد or  Rauvolfia serpentina, the Indian snakeroot, devil pepper, or serpentine wood, is a species of flower belonging to the milkweed family Apocynaceae. It is native to the South and East Asia.

Medicinal uses:

Physicians used Indian snakeroot traditionally  in medicine for hypertension and mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and anxiety. It alleviates symptoms like hallucinations, delusions, and mood disturbances. The phytochemical “reserpine” present in Indian snakeroot is the same as a prescription drug. Typically, people use this drug  to treat high blood pressure, schizophrenia, and some symptoms of poor circulation. It contains chemicals such as reserpine, which is a prescription medicine for high blood pressure. In addition to its antihypertensive effects, it has cardioprotective properties.

Asrol has sedative and anxiolytic effects, making it useful for managing anxiety, stress, and insomnia. It possesses anticonvulsant properties. Some studies suggest that it exhibits anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce inflammation. Additionally, this herb possesses mild analgesic (pain-relieving) effects, which can help alleviate minor aches and pains. It exhibits antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria and fungi.

Traditionally, people used it to regulate menstrual cycles and alleviate symptoms of menstrual disorders such as irregular periods, dysmenorrhea (painful periods), and menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding). People use it to promote gastrointestinal health and relieve symptoms of digestive disorders. Moreover, it contains phytochemical rauwolfin which also helps in lowering blood pressure. Physicians use this herb  for hypertension, anxiety, constipation, malaria, insomnia, and many other health concerns.

Generally, people used it in folk medicine in India for centuries to treat a wide variety of diseases, including snake and insect bites, fever conditions, malaria, abdominal pain, and dysentery. Moreover, they also used it as a uterine stimulant, antipyretic, and cure for senility.

We should not confuse it with Rauvolfia vomitoria or Yohimbe. These are not the same.

Adverse effects:

This herb has mild adverse effects, but high doses might cause low blood pressure and bradycardia.
