Plant description:

Indr Jo Shirin is a versatile plant that can take the form of a shrub or a tree. Ranging in height from 3 to 15 meters (10 to 49 feet), some specimens can even reach an impressive 18 meters (59 feet) tall. The bark of the Barringtonia acutangula is smooth and boasts a yellowish-brown color. This bark is about 10 millimeters thick and produces a milky-white latex.

Let’s move on to the leaves. These are simple and arranged in opposite pairs on the branches. They have an ovate shape with a pointed tip (obtusely acuminate) and can reach lengths of 10 to 20 centimeters (4 to 8 inches) while measuring 5 centimeters (2 inches) wide. The surface of the leaves is glabrous (smooth) but can sometimes be pubescent (hairy) on the underside. The leaf stalks are very short.

Medicinal uses:

Inderjo, a plant with distinct floral fragrance, bark color, and seed characteristics, offers various potential medicinal benefits. Generally, people believe a decoction brewed from Inderjo leaves and bark to act as a stomachic tonic and febrifuge (reducing fever). They also combine this decoction  sometimes with other vegetable bitters to enhance its effectiveness. Additionally, they may administer it for bowel complaints and during recovery from fevers or other acute illnesses.

Inderjo seeds, lacking any specific sweetness, are traditionally used to address seminal weakness. Physicians also give them in cases of excessive heat stimulation in the uterus. The bark of the Inderjo plant finds use beyond stomach and reproductive issues. Therefore, people consider it effective in alleviating localized pain, rheumatism, and chronic coughs or bronchitis.

It’s important to note that the odor of the flowers, color of the bark, and morphology (physical form) and taste of the seeds can help differentiate Inderjo from other, potentially bitter varieties of the same plant.

While these are traditional uses of Inderjo, you should remember that more scientific research is needed to fully understand the effectiveness and safety of this plant for various health conditions. Always consult with a healthcare professional before using Inderjo for medicinal purposes.
