Urdu Name(s): Jaifal, Jaiphal, Goz Buwa, Jawatri, Bisbasa
English Name(s): Nut-meg, Mace
Pharmacological actions:
Jaifal is aromatic, carminative. The oil exerts a mild irritant action on the mucous membrane of mouth and the digestive tract which induces a feeling of warmth and increases salivation. Physicians may employ it for the relief of gastric discomfort and flatulent colic and also to counteract the griping action of purgatives. Also inhaled for the relief of congestive respiratory disorders.
Externally it has irritant and rubefacient action causing at first a sensation of warmth and smarting which is followed by mild local anesthesia. Physicians may therefore also use it as counter-irritant and cutaneous stimulant in treatment of chronic inflammatory conditions, to relieve neuralgia as psychotropic and rheumatic pains. Stimulant, stomachic, astringent, aphrodisiac (its effect on the mucous membrane of urinary passages is irritative). Physicians declared it a prostaglandin inhibitor.
Given its antiseptic and aromatic qualities, people chew mace sometimes to freshen breath and add flavor to the mouth. They even believe it to be effective against headaches and migraines that are thought to be caused by “abnormal cold humoral affections” (an outdated theory of bodily fluids causing illness).
Medicinal uses:
Traditionally, Physicians has been administering jaifal to relieve various digestive issues like flatulence, colic, dyspepsia (indigestion), diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Interestingly, they also believe it to offer benefits for psychological disorders like insomnia.
Beyond digestion and sleep, nutmeg extends its potential benefits to the nervous system. It’s said to be helpful in managing neuralgia (nerve pain), menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding), dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), lumbago (lower back pain), and rheumatism. Some preparations even incorporate nutmeg to address cardiac debility (weak heart), sexual debility, and premature ejaculation. The essential oil of nutmeg finds use in aphrodisiac embrocations (lotions for topical application). People use this oil in combination with sesame oil, as a massage oil for conditions associated with cold, such as paralysis, facial paralysis, and rheumatism.
Mace, the lacy covering of the nutmeg seed, offers its own set of medicinal applications. Traditionally, it acts as a desiccative, meaning it absorbs moisture. People believe this property to be helpful in eliminating unwanted mucus buildup in the chest region, particularly the lungs. Mace possesses astringent qualities, which can cause tissue contraction. It’s also considered a digestive tonic. This combination of properties makes mace beneficial for managing persistent diarrhea.
