Description

Zeeri Siah at sknatural is Carum carvi Linn. It belongs to family “Umbelliferae/Apiaceae”. Generally people use its fruit (seeds) and oil (obtained through steam distillation). It is Warm and dry in third order.

Generally the plant shares similarities in appearance with other members of the carrot family, featuring finely divided, feathery leaves with thread-like divisions that grow on 20–30 cm (8–12 in) stems. Its main flower stem stands 30–60 cm (12–24 in) tall, bearing small white or pink flowers in compound umbels consisting of 5–16 unequal rays measuring 1–6 cm (0.4–2.4 in) long. Caraway fruits, informally seeds, are smooth, crescent-shape, laterally compress achenes, approximately 3 mm (1⁄8 in) long, exhibiting five pale ridges and emitting a distinctive pleasant smell when crushed. The flowering period typically occurs in June and July.

Properties:

Aromatic, carminative and astringent, pectoral, diuretic and anthelmintic, antidyspeptic and desiccant, diuretic and detergent, stomachic, antidiarrhoeal, useful against extra moistness or catarrhs present in the stomach, also distilled water (or aqua from seeds) is effective against stomach complaints as antiflatulent.

Recommended dosage:

3 to 5 g. Its continuous use may cause emaciation. Described as harmful for lungs following long duration or large dose use.

Medicinal uses:

Generally the zeeri siah, which people commonly use as a condiment, possess additional medicinal applications. An eye wash made from a water infusion of the seeds improves eyesight, alleviates pterygium, and also reduces ankyloblepharon. To prepare this eye wash, individuals dry the seeds thoroughly over heat, finely powder them, and apply them as collyrium.

When people administer black caraway seeds with suitable vehicles such as Adhatoda or honey, they effectively treat emphysema. In cases of stomach debility caused by dominant cold malhumours, flatulence, colic, hiccup, indigestion, loss of appetite, and diarrhea, people incorporate the seeds into compound preparations (Jawarishat) as part of powder mixtures. These mixtures act as digestive tonics, facilitating the desired peristaltic movement in the intestines and alleviating unwanted coldness in the stomach.

Furthermore, the essential oil derived from black caraway is extensively used as a digestive stimulant, carminative, condiment, and flavoring agent.
